Top Ten Favorite Films of 2012

10. 21 Jump Street
This movie shouldn't have been good.  In fact, it probably should have sucked.  But I found myself enjoying every minute of it!  I never really was a Channing Tatum fan until I saw this movie.  He always seemed pretty average to me, but I was really surprised to see him do comedy and to see him excel in it!  And of course Jonah Hill is hilarious.  I won't give too much away, but there's a pretty amazing cameo at the end that takes the movie from entertaining to awesome!  (It doesn't take a genius to figure out who the cameo is, but I was still surprised when it happened!)

9. Life of Pi
I really hope my Uncle Ang wins!  Okay, he's not really my uncle....  But I do hope he wins!!  Spielberg will get it, I'm sure, but I'm rooting for Ang.  I actually heard some negative things from people about this movie, so going into it, I had relatively low expectations.  Turns out, I have vastly different taste from the two people I spoke with about this movie, because I loved it!  It's such a visually stunning film, and although the story is pretty simple (young man trapped on a boat with a Tiger) it's filled with rich layers about faith, family, love, and the will to go on.  I saw it in 3D and was blown away!

8. The Avengers
I don't remember having this much fun in the theaters in a while!  The world was anticipating the Avengers movie for YEARS!  There was a lot of pressure for the movie to be good.  It was a difficult task for all!  I mean, multiple superheroes in one movie?  It could have tanked!  But it didn't!  It SOARED!  I thought the script handled the stories of each super hero very well, and all the performances were good (although, I will say I wish Ed Norton stayed on as Hulk; and I still can't get on the Scarlett Johannson bandwagon).  The action of course didn't disappoint!  The Avengers was just a fun entertaining movie!

7. Zero Dark Thirty
I didn't really start loving this movie until close to the end when they find the compound Bin Laden was hiding in.  Before that moment, the movie was good, but wasn't quite capturing me.  But as soon as they found it, I was all eyes and ears!  The scene of the raid on said compound by the Navy Seals was super intense!!!  I know this film is a dramatization of how it actually happened, but DAMN!  I felt like I was right there with them!  My Best Actress vote is for Jessica Chastain.  I think maybe Jennifer Lawrence will win - it's neck and neck! - but I'm hoping for Jessica to take it.  Although Jennifer Lawrence is good in Silver Linings, I feel like that kind of character and performance had been done several times before.  Jessica's performance, however, was much more complicated and nuanced.  I'm pretty upset about Kathryn Bigelow's snub, but I'll get over it.

6. Pitch Perfect
Oh hell yeah!  This movie is hilarious!!  Fat Amy steals the show!  Surprisingly the music is quite good!  I would rather watch this again than Le Miz!  If you haven't seen this movie yet, I highly recommend that you go rent it or add it to your Netflix queue as soon as possible!  You will not be disappointed!  I would say Pitch Perfect is this year's less raunchy (and slightly more family friendly) Bridesmaids.

5. Silver Linings Playbook
I almost didn't catch this one, but I am so glad I did!  It was absolutely delightful!  I know I said I think Jessica Chastain should win the Oscar, but I wouldn't be surprised if Jennifer wins.  She did an amazing job.  Bradley Cooper did a great job as well.  DeNiro was fine.  I think he's gonna win tonight simply because he's DeNiro.  But it definitely wasn't one of his better performances - not by FAR.  And can anyone tell me why the heck Jackie Weaver was nominated??  I mean, she wasn't bad, but she certainly didn't stand out by any means!  If she wasn't lurking around in the background, she was pulling Bradley Cooper and DeNiro apart from fights.  That's all she did!  She didn't even have like a "moment" where she shined on screen.  I just don't get it.  They must have run out of people to nominate or something.  Anyway, the movie is totally enjoyable!  It's definitely one of those movies that I would watch over and over.

4. Ted
I'm laughing just thinking about it!  I was so afraid that Ted was going to one of those movies where all the good parts are in the trailer, and then when you see the movie, you're super disappointed.  It's not!  There are PLENTY of other funny parts that's not in the trailer.  And oh my gosh I love Mark Wahlberg!!  Hands down, funniest movie of the year!

3. Moonrise Kingdom
This is going down in the books as my second favorite Wes Anderson movie.  (Fantastic Mr. Fox is my number one for those of you who are curious.)  The two kid leads are totally adorable!  Who are they?  They're fantastic!  And it was nice to see Ed Norton again!  I hadn't seen him in a while.  Of course he is absolutely perfect as a Scout Master.  This movie was the epitome of Wes Anderson quirkiness and I loved it!

2. Argo
When the nominations came out, I would have put my money on Lincoln winning Best Picture.  I feel kind of like a traitor for saying this, but I think if Ben had been nominated for a Best Directing Oscar, neither Ben nor Argo would have any chance of winning.  But alas!  Ben's snub was probably the best thing to happen to Argo the movie!  It's gonna win Best Picture.  I just know it is!!!!!  It's been sweeping all the other awards!  BAFTAs, Golden Globes, Critic's Choice, SAG, Director's Guild, Producer's Guild - yes, I'm counting!  How can a director NOT get nominated for a Best Directing Oscar, but win EVERY OTHER AWARD??  I've never seen anything like it!  Seriously, has this ever happened before?  Regardless of all the praise it's getting, Argo is an excellent movie!  This was probably one of the most suspenseful movies I've seen in a very long time!  It literally had me at the edge of my seat!  And the funny thing is, I knew how it was gonna end!  It's based off a true story, so we all know that the characters get home safe.  But while watching the movie, I was thinking, "OH MY GOD!  THEY'RE NOT GONNA MAKE IT!!!"  The last time I felt that way about a movie based off a true story was for Apollo 13.  Congratulations, Ben.  We've come a long way, haven't we?  No one believed in us, Ben.  They told us we were crazy.  They said we were a huge joke, and no one ever saw the potential.  We got made fun of so much.  But I never gave up on us.  And now you're finally getting the respect you deserve!

1. Django Unchained
Leo, Leo, Leo.  You are FABULOUS!!!  Why does the Academy hate you??  WHY?!?!?  Okay, you did have to compete with your equally fabulous costar (who I'm rooting for), but STILL!  You were downright RUTHLESS in this movie and ooohhhh so delicious!!  Django Unchained has a lot of racial controversy surrounding it...I'm not gonna touch that.  All I know is that I REALLY enjoyed the flick!  It was exciting, it was romantic, it had action, laughs, violence, horror, love, heroism!  From the start to the very end, I soaked it all up!  I'm rooting for Christoph Waltz tonight!  Some say his character was too close to his character in Inglourious Basterds, but I completely disagree.  I think Mr. Waltz is probably going to be one of the best actors of all time.  (The one thing Christopher Dorner and I agree on.)  I can't wait until Django comes out on DVD so I can watch it again and again!  Come on, Quentin, take home that gold!

Here is my opinion of the rest of the nominated films tonight:

Amour - Didn't see it.
Beasts of the Southern Wild - I liked this movie!  The little girl is really good!  It would be pretty awesome if she wins, but she won't.
Les Miserables - Anne Hathaway, enjoy your night!  The music is fantastic and the performances were great!  (Although I felt really bad for Russel Crowe!)
Lincoln - I think I'm the only person on the planet who found Lincoln to be extremely boring!  Of course Daniel Day Lewis is amazing!  But the movie as a whole is one giant snooze fest!!!

What were your favorite films of 2012?
Enjoy the show tonight, everyone!  Good luck, Seth MacFarlane!  Cross your fingers for Argo!  BEN, YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Top Ten Favorite Films of 2023

Happy Oscar Day!  For the first time in 27 years, I will miss the Oscars!  My family is visiting and I don't have TV!  So I will have to catch the highlights the next day on the interwebs.  Even though I won't be watching the show, doesn't mean I 'm not going to make my annual top ten list!  So here we go!    10. Oppenheimer   I'm sorry I didn't catch Oppenheimer in IMAX 70mm, but it was still super awesome watching in my living room in my PJ's!  I learned a lot about American history from watching Oppenheimer.  I knew very little about the Manhattan Project.  All I knew was that they tested the bomb in New Mexico and dropped it in Japan.  I didn't realize America was in a race with the Nazis to create the bomb, and I certainly didn't know about how they threw Oppenheimer under the bus after he spoke out against further use of the bomb.  Christopher Nolan is top Christopher Nolan, and I hope he wins for Best Director tonig...

Top Ten Favorite Films of 2022

Happy Oscar Day!  I don't know what they're going to do to top last year's very exciting show, but I can't wait to find out!   So I made it to the theaters twice this year!  I'm slowly easing my way back into theater life, however, it's hard when so many films are available to stream now!  The industry sure is changing!  I think overall 2022 was a great year for movies.  There were outrageous movies like The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (hilarious!), cute family films like The Rise of Gru (adorable!), and socially impactful movies like Till (heartbreaking).  And of course, there are Kim's Top Ten.  Warning: possible spoilers ahead!   10. She Said   I think the investigative journalism genre is underappreciated.  All the Presidents Men, Spotlight, The Post, and now She Said.  Every time I see these types of movies, I can't help but have great respect for journalists.  It makes me so mad at those people who scream "fa...

Top Ten Least Favorite Films of 2017

First of all, I apologize for the ugly color scheme and layout of my blog.  I never settled on anything that I was happy with, and since I write on this this basically once a year, I never cared enough about the look of it.  If you can stand the hideousness, please enjoy this list of my least favorite films from 2017! 10. Pitch Perfect 3 I'm sorry, Twin, Jet, and Kenneth!  I had a blast hanging out and seeing this with you guys, but the more I think about the actual movie...the more upset I get.  I am not ashamed to admit that I loved Pitch Perfect and Pitch Perfect 2!  I think they are both great and funny and uplifting.  I love the characters, and I love the friendship they have with each other.  That's why I was super excited to see this movie!  I wanted more of that!  More fun, silly, strong female friendships and great singing!  But what I got was a steaming load of crap!  I'm 100% certain every single person who worked on ...
