Top Ten Least Favorite Films of 2012

I just want to be clear that these are my least favorite movies, not necessarily the worst.  In fact, there were very few movies last year that really made me cringe.  I would say the top four movies were the only ones I felt were truly bad.  The rest, I just didn't like.

10. The Master
The Master is not a bad movie by any means.  In fact, it's a good movie.  But it wasn't quite my cup of tea.  I don't think I'd ever want to see it again.  It was just so grueling!  But the cinematography and acting is awesome.  I am so glad that Joaquin Phoenix didn't retire from acting.  He is absolutely tremendous in this movie.  In fact, I want him to win the Best Actor Oscar.  I know, I know, Daniel Day was awesome as Lincoln, he's possibly the best actor in the history of the world, but he's almost TOO good, ya know?  To the point where it's predictable.  But Joaquin's performance was anything but predictable!  It was a haunting, awkward, off-putting performance, even, and I couldn't get over it!  Joaquin's performance is the only thing that kept me engaged in this film.  If it wasn't for him, I would have checked out probably within the first ten minutes!

9. Mirror Mirror
I think if I saw this movie at ten years old, I think I really would have loved it.  But at 28, it's not that great.  It's cute, not great.  I did like the costumes!  And I think Lily Collins was absolutely adorable.  The dwarfs were probably my favorite part.  Other than all that, the movie didn't really have much else going for it.

8. Show White and the Huntsman
The OTHER Snow White movie that came out last year.  There's no secret that I hate Kristen Stewart.  And there is NO WAY she's fairer than Charlize Theron.  Are you kidding me??  Just on that principle alone I can't get on board with this movie.  I will say that the special effects were pretty cool, I do love Charlize Theron (although she did do a LOT of screaming in this movie - see photo), and of course I love Thor!  But all in all this movie was just meh.

7. Lawless
Obviously I saw this movie for the cast:  SHIA!!! Tom Hardy, Jessica Chastain, Guy Pearce!  What an awesome cast!  What a lackluster film!  Another one of those films where the performances are good, but the story doesn't deliver.  It just goes to show that movie making is a collective art form.  Everything has to come together for the whole film to be good.  If one domino falls, the whole thing falls apart!  Not that everything fell apart in Lawless, but it could have been better.

6. The Three Stooges
Actually there were parts of this movie I did enjoy.  And the actors actually did a good job playing the three Stooges.  But, alas, it's pretty much what you'd expect from a three Stooges remake, which is not much.

5. The Words
Actually, The Words could have been a good movie, but I didn't like the way the story was presented.  It was like a story within a story within a story.  I think it was just one too many layers.  The movie is about a struggling writer who comes across a very old unpublished manuscript and claims it as his own work.  The book is a hit and he becomes the country's hottest new writer.  But then the original author of the novel tracks him down.  Good premise, right?  Unfortunately, the whole story within a story within a story gets confusing and by the end, I was just over it.

4. Savages
This is where the list actually veers into bad movies.  I thought Savages had a pretty intriguing trailer.  Oliver Stone, Benicio, Salma; where could we go wrong?  It started okay, but it went wrong probably somewhere around the beginning of the second act.  And the voiceover narration by Blake Lively didn't help things.  Then the ending.  Oh man!  The ending of Savages was SO BAD!  SO BAD!  **Spoiler alert!** The movie had two endings, and they BOTH sucked!

3. Prometheus
Oh my Fassbender.  I REALLY didn't like this movie!  I don't understand why everyone thought it was so good!  I just could NOT get into it!  First of all, a lot of the plot and the character motivation made NO sense!  I can't really remember the plot much because I blocked it out of my memory, but I remember something about how they wanted to find out where human kind came from, and they find these scary looking bald alien things who end up killing the ENTIRE team, and the only survivor STILL wanted to go after them to find the "truth."  And there was a lot of Charlize Theron lurking around in the background.  I love Michael Fassbender (obviously) but even he couldn't save this movie!

2. That's My Boy
I really wish Adam Sandler would stop making these kinds of movies.  If he insists on making comedies, then he should do something more along the lines of The Wedding Singer or Happy Gilmore.  Otherwise, he should do more stuff like Punch Drunk Love!  He's capable of turning in good performances in good movies!  I am really sick of him acting like an obnoxious frat boy!

1. Cloud Atlas
I CAN'T TAKE THE YELLOW FACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  And that is all.

And there you have it!  As always, my top ten favorite films of 2013 will be posted Oscar night!!  GO, ARGO!

  1. I agree with you on Lawless. The whole time I was watching it, I kept thinking to myself "this movie actually had some real potential, but..."

Guy Pierce was AMAZING though. I think his performance is the only reason I didn't resent watching it.

Top Ten Favorite Films of 2023

Happy Oscar Day!  For the first time in 27 years, I will miss the Oscars!  My family is visiting and I don't have TV!  So I will have to catch the highlights the next day on the interwebs.  Even though I won't be watching the show, doesn't mean I 'm not going to make my annual top ten list!  So here we go!    10. Oppenheimer   I'm sorry I didn't catch Oppenheimer in IMAX 70mm, but it was still super awesome watching in my living room in my PJ's!  I learned a lot about American history from watching Oppenheimer.  I knew very little about the Manhattan Project.  All I knew was that they tested the bomb in New Mexico and dropped it in Japan.  I didn't realize America was in a race with the Nazis to create the bomb, and I certainly didn't know about how they threw Oppenheimer under the bus after he spoke out against further use of the bomb.  Christopher Nolan is top Christopher Nolan, and I hope he wins for Best Director tonig...

Top Ten Favorite Films of 2022

Happy Oscar Day!  I don't know what they're going to do to top last year's very exciting show, but I can't wait to find out!   So I made it to the theaters twice this year!  I'm slowly easing my way back into theater life, however, it's hard when so many films are available to stream now!  The industry sure is changing!  I think overall 2022 was a great year for movies.  There were outrageous movies like The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (hilarious!), cute family films like The Rise of Gru (adorable!), and socially impactful movies like Till (heartbreaking).  And of course, there are Kim's Top Ten.  Warning: possible spoilers ahead!   10. She Said   I think the investigative journalism genre is underappreciated.  All the Presidents Men, Spotlight, The Post, and now She Said.  Every time I see these types of movies, I can't help but have great respect for journalists.  It makes me so mad at those people who scream "fa...

Top Ten Least Favorite Films of 2017

First of all, I apologize for the ugly color scheme and layout of my blog.  I never settled on anything that I was happy with, and since I write on this this basically once a year, I never cared enough about the look of it.  If you can stand the hideousness, please enjoy this list of my least favorite films from 2017! 10. Pitch Perfect 3 I'm sorry, Twin, Jet, and Kenneth!  I had a blast hanging out and seeing this with you guys, but the more I think about the actual movie...the more upset I get.  I am not ashamed to admit that I loved Pitch Perfect and Pitch Perfect 2!  I think they are both great and funny and uplifting.  I love the characters, and I love the friendship they have with each other.  That's why I was super excited to see this movie!  I wanted more of that!  More fun, silly, strong female friendships and great singing!  But what I got was a steaming load of crap!  I'm 100% certain every single person who worked on ...
