In honor of Endgame coming out soon, I was requested by my friend to
write this blog. Making this list made
me realize that the number one factor that influences how much I like a Marvel
movie is the superhero. When you
see this list, it’s obvious which Avengers are my favorite. I also want you to keep in mind that I’ve
seen most of these movies only once, and when they first came out. And considering some of these movies are a
decade old, much of this list is based on my vague memory of them.
There might be spoilers for those who haven’t seen the
movies.
The Incredible Hulk
I think a lot of people forget this movie exists. It’s probably better that way. I love me some Eddie Norton, but this movie
was not good. It was better than the Ang
Lee Hulk, but still pretty bad. As much
as I love Ed Norton, I think Mark Ruffalo is a better Hulk.
Ant-Man and the Wasp
I love Paul Rudd! But
I didn’t love this one. It was kinda
basic, no? It felt like it lacked depth
and was just whatever. Easily brushed
aside among the other, far superior Marvel movies.
Captain America: The Winter Solider
So as you will see as you make your way through this list,
my least favorite Avenger is Captain America.
I can’t really tell you why either.
He’s just so meh to me. I’ve
heard that Winter Solider is generally considered one of the best, if not the
best Marvel movie, but I’m sorry to report that it did nothing for me.
Captain America: The First Avenger
Like I said, not a big fan of Captain America. This was the first Captain America movie, and
I was super excited about it when it came out.
Unfortunately, I was underwhelmed, and have not liked a Captain America
movie since.
The Avengers: Age of Ultron
This is about when I started getting superhero
fatigue. I loved the first Avengers, so
I was really excited about the sequel, but I came out of the theater a bit
disappointed. A bit…how do you say? Over it.
Plus, I did not dig the story line. The whole Jarvis becoming an independent being/Vision
thing was a little too meta for my taste.
Thor: The Dark World
I love Thor. Thor is
my favorite Avenger. More on that
later. But this movie was weak. Plus I never liked the pairing of Natalie Portman
with Thor. She’s too small!! It was distracting to me.
Captain America: Civil War
One of my co-workers said it best. It seemed like the whole movie was just a set
up for that big fight scene at the airport.
It didn’t seem to have much more going for it. I did like the introduction of Spider-Man
though! My biggest beef with this movie
is that I couldn’t believe that the Avengers would be so willing to physically
fight each other over their disagreement.
They’re superheroes! They’re
supposed to be better than that. I kept
thinking to myself, “Really?
Really? You’re gonna fight each
other?” I mean, maybe that’s what an
audience would want to see – their beloved Avengers at war – but not me. Maybe it’s the snowflake in me but I like
seeing them fight together, not against each other.
Doctor Strange
Doctor Strange was fun.
Not my favorite, but enjoyable.
The effects were cool! That
really all I have to say about this movie.
Ant-Man
I love Paul Rudd! I
thought Ant-Man was pretty decent. It’s
clearly not one of Marvel’s strongest films – nor is Ant-Man one of the
strongest characters – but it was fun and entertaining.
Captain Marvel
I like that Captain Marvel may very well be one of the most
powerful Avengers – if not the most
powerful Avenger – and she’s the one Fury beeps when shit hits the fan. I didn’t know anything about the comic book
character, Ms. Marvel, so I was an audience member that had to learn about her
and get to know her. I like her! I appreciated the feminist aspect of it and
the whole bit about her powers initially being controlled and held back by a
man, but then nevertheless, she persisted and was like, “Fuck you, Jude
Law! You don’t own me!” and became
Captain Marvel.
Iron Man 3
After Thor, Iron Man is my favorite Avenger. I like all three Iron Man movies, but number
three is the weakest for me. I didn’t
like the multiple Iron Men flying around.
I did like when Gwyneth put on the suit and was like, “Oh my god! That was so violent!” Honestly those were the only things I
remembered about this movie.
Guardians of the Galaxy
Guardians of the Galaxy is a lot of fun! The characters are hilarious and a riot to
watch. I’ll admit I was skeptical about
this one when it first came out because it just seem a little too out
there. But in the end, it worked! And it was great!
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
I put the Guardians of the Galaxy movies on par with each
other, as you can see. I like Vol. 2
only slightly better because now I know the characters, and I get to just enjoy
watching them do their silly antics and save the universe.
Iron Man 2
I like Iron Man 2 mostly because of Mickey Rourke! I thought he was such a good villain! And of course I can’t get enough of Robert
Downey Jr. as Iron Man. I think most people didn't love this movie, but I totally do. I can't help it!
The Avengers
This was it, you guys.
This was the culmination of everything we’d been waiting for. It could have been bad, but it wasn’t. It was good.
It was very, very good! We
finally got to see our favorite superheroes together fighting side by side,
playing off each other’s strengths, and exchanging in witty banter. It was all worth the wait. This is when we confirmed that Marvel Studios
pulled it off, and there would be much, much more to come.
Iron Man
The one that started it all!
The producers were very smart to start with Iron Man. Robert Downey Jr. is extremely charismatic
and entertaining. Iron Man perfectly set
the tone of the entire Marvel Universe. I
thought it was a great start to what can only be described as the most
successful comic book movie franchise of all time.
Spider-Man: Homecoming
I was surprised how much I enjoyed Spider-Man Homecoming! I still think Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man is
the best. But this new kid is pretty
good too! I liked how it didn’t
concentrate so much on the origin story since we all know the origin, and jumps
right into the meaty stuff. I am very much looking forward to the sequel.
Thor
From the moment Thor thundered on the big screen he made it
straight into my heart (and not mention my loins)!
I loved him immediately! I find
it so funny that people are recently Team Thor, when I’ve loved him from the
start. Don’t forget, this is also the movie
where we are introduced to Loki. I have
a theory that Loki was not supposed to be the major character he became, but
because Tom Hiddleston did such a great job with the character, they expanded
his role to so many more movies.
Avengers: Infinity War
One of the most impressive things about Infinity War is how
the film was able to juggle so many story lines and characters without making it
confusing or overwhelming. The
characters were split up all over the galaxy throughout most of the movie, yet,
you never lost track of where they were or what was going on. That’s masterful storytelling.
Black Panther
Wakanda Forever!!!
Black Panther is so good! It’s
so, so, so, SO good! My favorite thing
about Black Panther is that it’s not a typical superhero movie, in that the
“bad guy” wasn’t your typical villain.
The villain was T’Challa’s own cousin.
The threat wasn’t some alien form, or not even from a foreign
power. It came from within. It asked hard questions like, “When should we
let others in?” and “When should we keep them out?”
Thor: Ragnarok
So that part when Thor realized he was the god of thunder –
you know that scene – that scene where Hela was like, “Tell me, brother, what are
you the god of again?” And his eye lights up and he suddenly becomes THOR GOD
OF THUNDER, powered by lightening, soundtracked by Led Zepplein, soaking
panties all over the world!! I swear,
that moment made the entire Marvel franchise for me. It was so cool and so sexy!! I freakin’ love Thor!
